New Developments - Platonic & NSW PLA

MY WHOCKETY!  This is a full-on week for 7-ON.

Firstly, Verity Laughton and Vanessa Bates have both been nominated for the NSW Premier’s Literary Award! YAY!

Verity’s play The Sweetest Thing (directed by Sarah Goodes for Arts Radar and Belvoir B-Sharp) and Vanessa’s play Porn.Cake (directed by Pamela Rabe for Malthouse Theatre) are amongst a great field of playwriting peers and buddies. Check out the Sydney Morning Herald link here.

BUT WAIT THERE’S MORE!!  7-ON are doing a development week at NIDA with director Augusta Supple and these wonderful actors: Jeremy Waters, Stephen Wilkinson, Madeleine Jones, Lynden Jones, Maggie Blinco, Tracy Mann, Wendy Strehlow, Shondelle Pratt, Helen O’Leary.

The idea is to develop a group show (called PLATONIC) and this week is a valuable chance to try some new material, hear the creaks and clunks in the scripts, sharpen our thoughts and words and enjoy being in a rehearsal room again with so many creative people. The individual 7-ON scripts are listed below (in no particular order) and they all dig, delve and drill down into the title theme of “Platonic”

Ollie
Melody
By Verity Laughton

Stella Started It
By Donna Abela

Robinson
Gary
By Noelle Janaczewska

A Rose By Any Other Name
By Ned Manning

It’s Platonic Baby

Todd Prefers Red
Two Drifters
By Vanessa Bates

Many thanks and much Platonic feeling to the actors, Augusta and to NIDA!

*PS The picture is my vegie garden. I thought this was a nice sort of analogy for things growing and developing. Even though the broccoli's done now and I've just put in some buk choi. Also we've planted these poppies that are taking off like triffids...

A View From Moving Windows

Three of 7-ON (Donna, Vanessa & Noëlle) are in a new multi-playwright project, A View From Moving Windows. Directed by Gus Supple, it's part of Parramatta Riverside Theatre's True West season, and it previews this week. The project also has a website and a pretty lively blog.

Hope to see you in Parramatta next week.

A Friday Round-Up from Catherine

Very, very proud to report that some of our own are being rewarded for their hard work in the form of peer assessment from the AWG. Noelle and Donna picked up AWGIE Awards for their ABC Radio Drama  (Original and Adaptation) Plays. Also Vanessa was short-listed for the Kit Denton Disfellowship from what I've been told was a high number of submissions - subversion rules! Not only that but her terrific play Porn.Cake was nominated for Best Play so that ROCKS!

Personally I've been in that timeless zone of writing the 3rd draft of a 90 minute work. I feel it's close but the play is at the incremental stage, examining each moment intently, doubting and questioning and I won't really know what I have until I have the flesh and blood of actors blowing the breath into it...

All of which leads me to the reading of my new play 'gifted' at the Arts Platform and what a blast of energy it was, organised and cast by Augusta Supple. It was so wonderful for me to have the sensation of it for the very first time and the actors were excellent, totally invested in each moment and really allowed me to see things I hadn't before and work out where the 'hotspots' are and need attention. So generous especially for everyone to come out on a freezing cold evil wind of a day. Thank you.

Finally I have had two paintings selected for the Great Unknown, a curated exhibition at Artsite Gallery in Camperdown from this Saturday 1st Sept to the 16th Sept so do get along if you having an ART impulse of a day!

I Contain Multitudes—post show

Here's Cath, Vanessa and Donna with our fabulous director and producer Gus Supple—all looking pretty happy—after the second and final performance of I CONTAIN MULTITUDES at The Old 505 Theatre on 12 November.

And here are our actors with Gus (on the far right of the photo). From the back and left to right the actors are: Matt Charleston (A Child into the World by Catherine Zimdahl), Melinda Dransfield (A Cleansing Force by Donna Abela), Felix Jozeps (Narcissus by Hilary Bell), Stephen Wilkinson (iSpiderman by Noëlle Janaczewska), Jennifer White (Sex-Ed by Ned Manning), Madeleine Jones (The World's Tiniest Monkey by Vanessa Bates) and Josipa Draisma (Ariadne by Verity Laughton).

They're not in the photos, but thanks also to composer Michael Imielski, stage manager Oliver Rynn and the wonderful NovemberISM playwrights (Tamara Asmar, Kit Brookman, Rebecca Clarke, Tahli Corin, Joanna Erskine & Rick Viede) for the opportunity to do I CONTAIN MULTITUDES.

Our Melbourne cast

Here's our Melbourne cast and director at the reading of The Seven Needs last Thursday.

As we're mostly Sydney-based, it was only Ned (who is about to become a Melbourne resident) who was able to get along to the reading. See the previous post for his account of the evening.

Stories from the 428

Four of 7-ON (Donna, Vanessa, Noëlle & Ned) are involved in Augusta Supple’s latest project, Stories from the 428.

The 428 is a bus route that goes from Sydney’s Circular Quay to Canterbury in the city’s inner south-west. Given the recent release of the Public Transport Blueprint for Sydney, it’s pretty topical—but more than that, it’s a great initiative because it brings together a whole bunch of writers and other artists to work on something that goes from ‘whoa to go’ in less than 3 months. There are 16 participating writers and we’re a mix of the more experienced and less experienced. We have different styles, sensibilities, interests, and approaches to creating our 10-minutes of material, so come along and see Stories from the 428.

There are 2 different shows with 8 writers apiece, each running for a one-week season. Vanessa & Ned are in Week 1, Donna’s & Noëlle’s work is in Week 2.

Stories from the 428
Week 1: Wed 24—Sat 27 March, 8:00 pm & Sun 28 March, 5:00 pm.
Week 2: Wed 31 March—Sat 3 April, 8:00 pm & Sun 4 April, 5:00 pm.
Sidetrack Theatre, 142 Addison Road, Marrickville. (The 428 bus stops just outside.)

Check out the project’s website and on Facebook.
