Noëlle Janaczewska is Sydney-based playwright, poet, essayist, and the author of The Book of Thistles (UWA Publishing)—part environmental history, part poetry, part memoir. She is the recipient of multiple awards, fellowships and residencies, including the 2020 NSW Premier’s Digital History Prize, a Queensland Premier’s Literary Award, the Griffin Award, ten AWGIE (Australian Writers’ Guild Industry Excellence) Awards and a Windham-Campbell Prize from Yale University for her body of work as a dramatist. Noëlle’s recent productions and publications include: Experiment Street (ABC Radio National, 2019); Yellow Yellow Sometimes Blue (Q Theatre /Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre, Sydney, 2018); Seoul City Sue (ABC Radio National, 2018); audio scripts for the National Museum of Australia and the British Museum’s Rome: City and Empire exhibition, and Good With Maps (Siren Theatre Company, multiple seasons 2016 – 2021). Noëlle’s latest book is Scratchland (UWA Publishing Poetry Series, 2020).

A Friday Round-Up from Catherine

Very, very proud to report that some of our own are being rewarded for their hard work in the form of peer assessment from the AWG. Noelle and Donna picked up AWGIE Awards for their ABC Radio Drama (Original and Adaptation) Plays. Also Vanessa was short-listed for the Kit Denton Disfellowship from what I've been told was a high number of submissions - subversion rules! Not only that but her terrific play Porn.Cake was nominated for Best Play so that ROCKS!

Personally I've been in that timeless zone of writing the 3rd draft of a 90 minute work. I feel it's close but the play is at the incremental stage, examining each moment intently, doubting and questioning and I won't really know what I have until I have the flesh and blood of actors blowing the breath into it...

All of which leads me to the reading of my new play 'gifted' at the Arts Platform and what a blast of energy it was, organised and cast by Augusta Supple. It was so wonderful for me to have the sensation of it for the very first time and the actors were excellent, totally invested in each moment and really allowed me to see things I hadn't before and work out where the 'hotspots' are and need attention. So generous especially for everyone to come out on a freezing cold evil wind of a day. Thank you.

Finally I have had two paintings selected for the Great Unknown, a curated exhibition at Artsite Gallery in Camperdown from this Saturday 1st Sept to the 16th Sept so do get along if you having an ART impulse of a day!

7-ON Playwrights was established in 2005 by Donna Abela, Catherine Zimdahl, Ned Manning, Noëlle Janaczewska, Vanessa Bates, Verity Laughton and Hilary Bell. Seven minds that don’t think alike but are simpatico in this—our belief in the transformative properties of our artform and its place in Australian culture. With over 200 plays between us, our work has been produced on stages across Australia. Internationally, we have been produced in Botswana, the US, the UK, the Czech Republic, Sweden, Hong Kong, Ireland, New Zealand, Germany, Denmark, France, Canada, Vietnam, Korea and Japan. We have over 40 awards between us including: 14 Australian Writers’ Guild Awards, 4 Griffin Playwriting Awards, 3 Premiers’ Literary Awards, 4 Inscription Awards, an Adelaide Critics’ Circle Prize, a Phillip Parsons Young Playwright’s Award, a Wyndham Campbell Prize, a Centenary Medal, a Patrick White Playwrights’ Fellowship, and a Human Rights Award for Drama. As 7-ON we advocate for playwrights, initiate performance and publishing projects, and support and celebrate each other’s work. We create projects that are best served by a multitude of voices. These have included The Seven Needs (Griffin, 2007), Thus Spake Zarathustra (Wollongong University, 2008), Long Shadows (STC workshop, 2009), Platonic (Hothouse development, 2013), We Are The Ghosts Of The Future (Rocks Discovery Museum, 2015), and various works under the banner of Old Texts Revisited (ABC Radio, 2009), I Contain Multitudes (Novemberism Playwriting Festival, 2011) and No Nudity, Weapons or Naked Flames (MayDay! Playwrights’ Festival, 2013) which presented a selection of monologues from our anthology of the same name published by the Federation Press in 2012. We are also included in Currency Press’ anthology of short plays Short Circuit (2009).
