And Now For Something Somewhat Different...

Every now and then, in this mean old writing life, you get a little win...A poem of mine, Kangarilla, Summer, 2016, published earlier this year in the Australian Book Review, has been included in Black Inc Books, Best Australian Poems, 2016, edited this year by Sarah Holland-Batt, who is, incidentally the winner of the 2016 Prime Minister's Award for Poetry. As we say from time to time here at 7-ON, Woot! The particular poem means a lot to me and I am more than honoured to be in such company. (Verity)

PM's Literary Awards - Playwrights need not apply

Once again, the Prime Minister's Literary Awards have opened its call for entries. Once again, the gongs will go to fiction, non-fiction, history and poetry - but not to plays or screenplays. Yes, the debate over whether a play is literature is always ready for a run around the block. However, if a play exists as a published cultural artefact that one can buy and put on one's shelf beside a Richard Flanagan or a Henry Reynolds or a Chloe Hooper, and if it has similarly stirred consciences and imaginations, ought not plays also be eligible?
