You have to get your butt in the chair and do the work

We're deluged with advice, articles and blog posts like this one from HowlRound that tell writers and artists that we need to focus more on becoming ‘creative entrepreneurs’—and by implication less on the actual writing? So it was an interesting counterpoint to read this interview with bestselling crime author Harlan Coben in The Guardian. Here’s a snippet:

‘Coben points out that “people waste a lot of time doing the marketing and networking rather than trying to write the best book that they can”. When people ask him how to go about growing their Twitter or Facebook presence, he cites Gillian Flynn, a friend and the author of the breakout hit Gone Girl, who avoids Twitter and Facebook: “I’m sure someone will find exceptions, but I haven’t really seen that many authors who have completely broken out because of their wonderful social media skills.”

What does make a career go, then? [the interviewer asks] Coben. “Every successful author I’ve ever known still has to treat it as a job. You have to get your butt in the chair and do the work. If you go into it thinking that the muse is going to come whisper in your ear every morning, that’s the kind of nonsense that drives me batty, and it’s just not true. And that’s true for the most commercial writer and the most critically acclaimed writer.”’

patrick white award 2015

Whoot! say the Sevens, rather chuffed. There are two of us on the short-list for this year's Sydney Theatre Company's Patrick White Award. As in the short list reads:

Furthest West by Michael Collins
Ibis (a post-industrial fable-play) by Benito do Fonzo
What Has Been Taken by Verity Laughton
Tsunami by Ned Manning
The Man's Bitch by Debra Thomas

Naturally, not all of us can win, but it's nice for the plays to have a bit of an outing, eh? So chookers to the lot of us, and we hope the announcement is a fun night for winners and losers both.

There's no word as to who is being considered for the STC's Patrick White Fellowship (a former Fellow is yet another Seven, namely Hilary Bell.) But we'll be keeping a beady eye open for that result, too.

Monkey… Journey to the West

It's rare for an Australian playwright to enjoy a return season of her work, but today I am fortunate enough to see my adaptation of Monkey… Journey to the West hit the boards again, this time at The Sydney Opera House. Produced by Kim Carpenter's Theatre of Image, and directed by John Bell and Kim Carpenter, we play the Playhouse from the 4th to the 19th of April, then transfer to the Playhouse at Canberra from the 23rd to the 25th of April.

Chookas to the vivacious cast - Aljin Abella, Justin Smith, Darren Gilshenan, Aileen Huynh, Anthony Taufa, Ivy Mak, Jonathan Wong, Joshua Tieu, Lia Reutins, Troy Honeysett, Jair Coronado and Peter Kennard.
